Matteo Cairoli’s dream of moving to Prototypes has finally come true. Cairoli and the Swiss Edoardo Mortara, in fact, join the other four official drivers with whom the Lamborghini Iron Lynx team will face the dual commitment in 2024 with the Lamborghini Sc63 LmDh in the FIA World Endurance Championship and in the Imsa WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
The decision had been in the air for some time, but it was only made official yesterday, while the driver from Como, having said goodbye to Porsche after the Gulf 12 Hours in Abu Dhabi, is in Austin for the official tests. Both Cairoli and Mortara boast a similar path, which from single-seaters has led them to become reference names in the major GT series at an international level.
The driver from Como and the Swiss join the other factory drivers Mirko Bortolotti, Andrea Caldarelli, Romain Grosjean and Daniil Kvyat, and both took to the track at the wheel of the LmDh car in the Austin (Cota) tests this week, after an initial contact had on the Jerez circuit last September. In particular, Cairoli will take part in the Imsa series, alternating behind the wheel with Caldarelli and Grosjean starting from the 12 Hours of Sebring scheduled from 13 to 16 March and in the following three rounds of the Endurance Cup series (6 Hours of Watkins Glen, Indianapolis and Petit Le Mans of Road Atlanta). «I want to thank Lamborghini, Giorgio Sanna and the Iron Lynx team – says Matteo Cairoli – for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. I’m obviously ready to give my best. This is a dream that I have long hoped would come true. Doing it with an Italian company like Lamborghini makes me doubly happy. The Austin tests helped me gain more confidence with the car to be ready for next year. I’m already super pumped.”
Matteo Cairoli, at 27 years old, is ready to make the leap into Hypercar with Lamborghini, closing 10 years of collaboration as a Porsche driver, after the victory in the 2014 Carrera Cup Italia. The driver from Como was a formidable talent on Proton’s 911 Rsr Gte and Project 1 in the Elms since 2016 and then in the Wec since 2017, but we must also remember the victory in the 24 hours of Nurburgring 2021 with Manthey Racing and the 3rd place in the GT World Challenge with Dinamic Racing in 2020. Now a lot of work and tenacity are were rewarded.
